<mat1m> hi everybody, i have a question about partitions, anyone available?
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, o/
<+ibuclaw> as soon as I boil the kettle =)
<+ibuclaw> but, feel free to ask away, and someone should pick it up.
<mat1m> thanks, here is the question: i have asystem with ubuntu + win7, i accidently clicked "make this drive bootable" for win partition
<mat1m> now naturally win7 says "a recent hardware change bla bla bla and can't boot"
<mat1m> how to be able to dual boot again?
<kinja-sheep> You can't untick "Bootable" option?

<+ibuclaw> mat1m, hmm I concur with kinja-sheep
<kinja-sheep> ibuclaw: On the different topic, had you worked with dnotify or inotify-tools before?
<+ibuclaw> dnotify rings a bell
<+ibuclaw> inotify is kernel signals?
<mat1m> no, palimpsest started an operation that enden with errors, and now this drive is shown as unknown file system
<mat1m> i think i've corrupted the partition table?
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, tried partition manager?
<kinja-sheep> ibuclaw: I'm attempting to write a dnotify || inotify + rsync script.
<+ibuclaw> system -> administration -> partition manager

<mat1m> no, i decided to ask anyone who knows better then me, to not make a mistake again :)
<kinja-sheep> It is hit-or-miss approach we're making. :)
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, well, do you have that menu entry installed?
<+ibuclaw> kinja-sheep, I prefer to call it trial and error
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, i've installed gparted, is this the tool i need?
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, yes
<+ibuclaw> I'd rather see what that has to say first.
<mat1m> well, gparted shows on /dev/sda2 with unknown file system
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, and all you did was make it bootable?
<+ibuclaw> how did you do that?
<mat1m> who was a partiton that i was able to mount before and access files of win
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, ok. but still doesn't answer how you made it "bootable"
<mat1m> yes, exactly. in fact i've even thought: "it shouldn't be so easy without a notice"
* Yos (n=Yos@pdpc/supporter/active/yos) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
<mat1m> on palimptest, there is a clickable box "bootable"
<mat1m> i've choosed it and clicked apply,

<mat1m> an operation started and later i saw an error message that say: operation failed
<+ibuclaw> oic
<mat1m> so i think i have to rebuild partition of this drive, is that correct?

<+ibuclaw> mat1m, I've never really used palimpsest, but only logicial thing I can think of is it the partition was mounted when you tried it
<+ibuclaw> or pressed "cancel" halfway through it
<mat1m> yes, with this "make bootable" operation i corrupted the volume.

<mat1m> the operation ended itself with errors. i mean "make bootable" operation couldn't successfully terminated
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, got it
<+ibuclaw> I've managed to confirm on an SDD card w/ FAT32 fs
<+ibuclaw> okies - I'll attempt a recovery my way, and if successful, will guide you through =)
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, :)
<mat1m> thanks a lot, i will be waiting :)

<+ibuclaw> yay!
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, okies, install testdisk
<mat1m> ok

<mat1m> i'm doing it right now

<+ibuclaw> testdisk is a partition table recovery app. It's very cool.

<+ibuclaw> (and I just used it to recover last night's photos on my Camera's SD card)

<mat1m> the operation ended itself with errors. i mean "make bootable" operation couldn't successfully terminated

<mat1m> thanks a lot, i will be waiting :)

<+ibuclaw> yay!

<+ibuclaw> Select "Proceed", and Press Enter
<+ibuclaw> Select "Intel", and Press Enter
<+ibuclaw> Select "Analyse", and Press Enter
<+ibuclaw> Select "Quick Search", and Press Enter
<+ibuclaw> Press "Y" - if asked about the Vista Partition thingy
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, then let it scan
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, after it's finished the initial scan, can you screenshot what you can see and upload to ie: imageshack.us ?

<mat1m> ok, i see just a line as linux partition, didn't as press "Y"
<mat1m> and "enter:to continue" right?
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, yes
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, also, before you do anything, can you open another terminal window, and run the following:
<+ibuclaw> sudo fdisk -l
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, then copy and paste the output into this URL link http://paste.ubuntu.com
<+ibuclaw> and paste the link generated here
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, http://paste.ubuntu.com/359629/ my system isn't english but i tried to translate between <<< >>>
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, i hope you'll understand
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, ah Turkish - a beautiful language :)
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, thanks, that's very kind of you :)
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, okies, install testdisk
<mat1m> ok
<mat1m> i'm doing it right now
<+ibuclaw> testdisk is a partition table recovery app. It's very cool.
<+ibuclaw> (and I just used it to recover last night's photos on my Camera's SD card)
<+ibuclaw> I had them backed up anyway - but you need something to test, to see if fixable imo
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, when installed, open a terminal window
<mat1m> ok, it's installed and running now, testdisk 6.11
<+ibuclaw> sudo testdisk /dev/sda

<+ibuclaw> Select "Proceed", and Press Enter

<mat1m> +ibuclaw, i hope you'll understand
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, ah Turkish - a beautiful language :)
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, thanks, that's very kind of you :)
<+paultag> Wish I knew Turkish :)
<+paultag> Nur Deutsch fur mich :)
<+ibuclaw> Jestem studentem Polski
* +DiegoTc (i=cdd3c16c@gateway/web/freenode/x-hisejpfaxqpyidqf) Quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, still scanning ? =)
<+ibuclaw> I know it will take quite a while on a large disk
<mat1m> yes, i make deep scan because quickscan just found a linux partition
<+ibuclaw> ah, kk
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, once it is finished, it will show you ever partition it has found
<mat1m> deepscan is on 48% now and saw ntfs partitions
<+ibuclaw> to list the contents of a partition, highlight it and press P
<+ibuclaw> this is to confirm that you have found the correct filesystem
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, ok i see
<+ibuclaw> once done, you mark green using the Left + Right arrows
<+ibuclaw> * means bootable
<+ibuclaw> P means primary
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, the idea is to look at the fdisk -l output (the start and end blocks)
<+ibuclaw> and to match what testdisk finds to that table
<+ibuclaw> then write the new partition table and reboot
<+ibuclaw> write the recovered partition table, even
<mat1m> ok, i understand, so my problem's keyword is the warning message that fdisk gave us: (with a better translation: "Partition table entries are not in disk order"
<mat1m> we just have to sync my partition table and my disk, am i correct?
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, well, not sync
<+ibuclaw> recover the old partition table (before palimpsest poked it)
<+ibuclaw> the data on the now unknown filesystem is still there
<+ibuclaw> its just because of the altered partition table that it has became unknown.
<+ibuclaw> correcting any erroneous adjustment should correct that error to make it seekable, and mountable again.
<mat1m> :) "sync" was the best word that i could find :) by the way, i don't want to forget it later, thanks a lot, you did help me much +ibuclaw
<+ibuclaw> woah - it has been a while since I last rsync'd my music O:

<mat1m> +ibuclaw, i see now my windows files with highlight and "p", "q" is to return to previous screen? or quit program?
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, q is to return to previous screen from the List Files view
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, before you write changes - can you take a screenshot, so I can give you the thumbs up?
<+ibuclaw> upload to ie: http://imageshack.us
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, http://img31.yfrog.com/img31/5351/ekrangrntsse.png
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, ok, the second partition down
<+ibuclaw> use left / right arrow keys to highlight as green
<+ibuclaw> set it as *
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, to be sure, i'm higlightning the 153103777 (the part that i've found my win files) line, right?
<+ibuclaw> one min
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, http://paste.ubuntu.com/359655/
<+ibuclaw> 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th.
*

<+ibuclaw> if you set it to how you see it in that paste bin, that should restore the old partition table.
<mat1m> i'm confused. do i have to set as "*" 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th lines? or just 2nd line as is on the picture you send me?
<+ibuclaw> '*' on 2nd
<+ibuclaw> 'P' on 4th
<+ibuclaw> 'L' on 7th
<+ibuclaw> 'L' on 8th
<+ibuclaw> 'P' on 9th
<mat1m> ok, now i see, sorry for that misunderstanding
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, the pastebin and what you have in testdisk should match up
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, once you are happy (and ready) with the recovered layout, press 'Enter'
<+ibuclaw> and you Left/Right to select the 'Write' option
<+ibuclaw> then you'll need to reboot in order for it to take effect
<mat1m> i did it, i quit all progs ands restart now, i will still be here bacause this computer that i write now is another one, not the linux one
<+ibuclaw> ah, kk
<+ibuclaw> always useful, I suppose
* +PabloRubianes (n=chatzill@r190-135-195-20.dialup.adsl.anteldata.net.uy) Quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
<mat1m> so, +ibuclaw, i would kiss very few humans in my life (yes i do kiss my cat often :) but i really want to kiss you now! (i have to mention that in turkish culture if you say that to someone it means you are very very happy, and most of the cases this person saves you on a big trouble, wihch is the case for me now! :)
<mat1m> thanks again and thanks a lot
<+ibuclaw> mat1m, no probs

<+ibuclaw> mat1m, I hope you learned something new today - getting to grips with testdisk - it is an invalueable tool for partition and file recovery. Use it wisely, and you should be able to get yourself out if you fall into this trap again. :)
<mat1m> +ibuclaw, totaly agreed with you, i will ASAP put on my site how i solved this problem. May be it will help others also to solve their's.
